Looking After Yourself Through This

Not a soft topic. Decisions made exhausted are worse decisions, and this process runs on decisions.

This is on the site for a practical reason. A foreclosure takes months, it involves a series of consequential decisions, and people making them while barely sleeping make worse ones. Looking after yourself is not separate from handling this well — it is part of it.

If things are worse than difficult, the free supports are here. In crisis, 988 is Canada's Suicide Crisis Helpline, by call or text.

Contain it

Set a window — an hour a day on the house, not every waking hour. Outside that window, it is not your job. This sounds artificial and works surprisingly well: the problem does not get solved faster by being carried continuously, and the rest of your life still needs you.

Break it into single tasks

"Sort out the house" is not a task and cannot be started. "Phone the lender for a payout figure" is one call. Do one thing, then the next. Progress in this situation is entirely made of small calls and small documents.

Protect the basics

Sleep, food and moving about are the things that go first and matter most. You are running a months- long process that needs judgement. Treat rest as part of the work rather than a reward for finishing it.

Tell one person

Carrying this alone is far harder than it needs to be. One friend or family member who knows changes the weight of it, and most people find the feared reaction does not arrive.

Watch the coping that costs

Drinking more, gambling, spending impulsively for relief. All of them are common under this kind of stress and all of them make the underlying problem worse. If any is creeping up, that is worth mentioning to someone — 211 Alberta will connect you to local support.

Keep some perspective in reach

A house is a large thing to lose and it is worth grieving. It is also recoverable. People rebuild from this — they buy again, they rent somewhere they like, their children are fine. The version of this that feels permanent at three in the morning is not the version that turns out to be true.

And do the practical thing when you can

Uncertainty is usually heavier than bad news. Getting real numbers — a payout figure, a value, a clear picture of the options — tends to reduce the weight even when the numbers are not good, because you are dealing with a situation rather than imagining one.

Questions people ask

Is it normal to feel this bad?
Yes. Financial and housing stress are among the most common causes of serious distress, and this process runs for months.
Where can I get free support in Alberta?
211 Alberta connects you to local services, Health Link is 811, and 988 is the Suicide Crisis Helpline by call or text.
How do I stop thinking about it constantly?
A set window each day helps more than it sounds like it would. Outside it, the problem is genuinely not your job.
