If You Are Struggling to Cope

This part matters more than the property, and it is the part most people say nothing about.

Money trouble is not only a financial problem. It disrupts sleep, strains relationships and carries a shame that keeps people from asking for help — which is precisely the thing that makes everything else harder to solve.

If that is where you are, it is worth saying plainly: this is a common response to a genuinely difficult situation, not a personal weakness.

If you are in crisis

If you are thinking about harming yourself, please reach out now. In Canada, 988 is the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available by call or text, 24 hours a day. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

Nothing about a house is worth your life. Houses are recoverable. That is not a figure of speech — people rebuild from this every year.

Free support in Alberta

211 Alberta — call, text or chat 211 to be connected to local community, financial and mental-health services. It is the single most useful number when you do not know who to ask.

Health Link, 811 — free health advice, including mental health, at any hour.

Money Mentors (1-888-294-0076) — an Alberta non-profit offering free credit counselling. Talking to someone about the whole picture, rather than one bill, often reduces the weight of it considerably.

Our city pages list the free legal clinics and housing supports local to each area.

Practical things that help

Tell one person. Carrying this alone is much harder than it needs to be, and most people find the reaction they feared does not arrive.

Break it into single tasks. "Sort out the house" is overwhelming. "Phone the lender for a payout figure" is one call. Do that one thing, then the next.

Set a boundary on it. An hour a day on this, not every waking hour. The problem will not be solved faster by being thought about continuously, and you will make better decisions rested.

And on the practical side

When you are ready, a free assessment costs nothing and puts real information where guesswork currently is. Most people find the actual position is clearer, and more workable, than the version they had been imagining at three in the morning.

Questions people ask

Is it normal to feel this bad about money?
